FIFA World Cup 2026 | Toronto’s Epic Kickoff Event

History will be made on June 12, 2026, when Toronto hosts Canada’s opening match at the FIFA World Cup – the first time any Canadian city has hosted this prestigious tournament.  As a prelude to this momentous occasion, Toronto chose to officially reveal its FIFA World Cup Countdown Clock exactly one year ahead of this match.  Designated as “Soccer Day in Toronto,” I made my way downtown to Nathan Philipps Square to check this event out.

Scheduled from 4-8pm EST, Soccer Day was essentially a mini-fan festival where fans could interact with local pro sports teams, like AFC Toronto and York United, play mini-games for prizes, and check out the official posters for each FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City.  I was there with the Voyageurs as we were invited by the event organizers to lead the crowd in cheers ahead of Mayor Oliva Chow’s opening remarks.  There was also a short Indigenous ceremony to honour the First Nations of Canada, which added a unique touch to the event.

Midway through the event, the moment had arrived where we gathered in the southeast corner of Nathan Phillips Square for the official reveal of the FIFA World Cup Countdown Clock!  Mayor Chow added some closing remarks before leading the crowd in a final countdown, which ended up being a funny mishap where she struggled to pull off the cover for what seemed like an eternity but was in fact only about 10-15 seconds.  I hung around with the rest of the Voyageurs for another half hour or so to take photos at the clock before we all parted ways for the evening.

It should be noted that Toronto will host six World Cup matches.  This includes five group stage matches and one Round of 32 match.  Matches will be held at BMO Field, which will be renamed Toronto Stadium for the tournament because of sponsorship conflict reasons.  Except for Canada, we will not know what other teams will play here until FIFA holds the group draw later this year.  BMO Field will go through some upgrades over the next 12 months to meet FIFA requirements, including adding temporary seating to meet the minimum 45,000 seat capacity.  I got to see of these upgrades recently at the Canadian Shield tournament, so I can’t wait to see the finishing touches when they are done!

Round of 32 Fixture

And just like that, the reality of Toronto hosting World Cup has finally sunk in.  I’m not sure what else we can expect from the event committee over the next 12 months, but I’ll do my best to attend whatever events I can to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
